Narrative Therapy service | Your story counselling
Narrative therapy is a style of therapy that helps people become—and embrace being—experts in their own lives. In narrative therapy, the emphasis is on the stories you develop and carry with you through life.
There are a variety of techniques and exercises used in narrative therapy to help people heal and overcome a problematic narrative. Some of the most commonly used techniques include the following.
Put your story together
Narrative therapists help their clients construct their narratives. This process allows the individual to find their voice and explore the events in their life and the meanings they have attached to these experiences. When their story is put together, the person becomes an observer of their story and looks at it with the therapist, trying to identify the dominant and problematic story.
Externalization
Compiling the story of their life also allows people to observe themselves. This helps create distance between the individual and their problems, which is called externalization. This distance allows people to better focus on changing unwanted behavior.
